Canada's oldest woolen mill in New Brunswick - serving knitters and weavers since the mid-1800's - produces mainly pure wool yarns sold in skeins.

From single-ply fingering weight to four-ply extra bulky yarn in traditional and contemporary colours, the yarns are ideal for everthing from fine socks and gloves to hooked rugs.

To ensure colour consistency, all yarn for a project should be purchased at once to obtain the same dye lot number (printed on the label).

The advantage of skeined yarn is that the natural elasticity of pure wool is retained when prepared in loose skeins rather than tightly wound balls. Skeins of yarn are tied together at intervals to prevent tangling.

When you find bits of hay or other plants in pure wool yarn, it reflects the manufacturer's concern for the environment. Although the wool undergoes the traditional sorting, spinning and cleaning, removing all traces of vegetable matter that gets caught in the sheep's wool as it roams the countryside requires immersion of the raw wool in a very strong solution of acid.

Briggs & Little yarn does not undergo the "carbonizing" process, or strong acid bath. Therefore, you may notice the occasional fragment of straw or other foreign pieces, easily removed by hand or it may fall out when the garment is washed.
