Alpaca Peru Hat & Mitts With “Fur” Trim

Sizes:
Mitts - Ladies medium(large)

Hat - To fit an average ladies head. Hat measures 20”, if you want a smaller hat you
can knit it on a 3.5mm needle instead.

Materials:
Hat - 2 balls Alpaca Peru, 1 ball Baby Monkey in a complimentary colour
1 pair 4 mm 60 cm circular needles and one 4.5mm crochet hook for ties
Gauge: 22 sts/4” on 4 mm needles in stocking st

Mitts - 2 balls Alpaca Peru
1 ball Baby Monkey in a complimentary colour
1 pair of 3.5 mm needles
Gauge: 26 sts/4” on 3.75 mm needles in stocking st
If you are doing the set then only one ball of Baby Monkey is required.

Hat:
Hat is started at the top and worked down. With 4mm circular needle and Alpaca Peru cast on 110 sts, join in round and mark start of round. Work in stocking st until piece measures 7”. Change to Baby Monkey and knit 1 row. Purl next 3 rows. Change back to Alpaca Peru and continue in stocking st until piece measures 8”. Next round: K20, work 47 sts in 1x1 rib starting and ending with a knit, k20, work 23 sts in 1x1 rib starting and ending with a knit. Repeat last row once. Next row: K20, cast off next 47 sts in 1x1 rib, k20 sts, cast off next 23 sts in 1x1 rib, k20. Working each ear flap separately turn work,* k2, p16, k2, ignoring other sts for now. Next row: Knit. Next row: K2, P16, K2. Next row: K2, ssk, k12, k2tog, k2. Repeat last 2 rows until 5 sts remain ending with rsf for nex row. Next row: K1, s1, k2tog, psso, k1. P3tog, fasten off.* With wsf rejoin yarn to remaining sts and work from * to * as for other ear flap.

Ties
Cut one strand of Baby Monkey and 2 strands of Alpaca Peru 2 meters long. Fold all 3 strands in half and with crochet hook attach to tip of ear flap. Using all 6 strands chain until desired length or yarn is used up, fasten off. Repeat on booth ear flaps.

Using your yarn and a darning needle gather the top into quarters and pull tight.


Now divide sections again so there are eight loops.


Now run your yarn through the tips of all eight sections and again through the first one.


Now pull your yarn tight so that it pulls all the points together. Poke the yarn through to the other side and weave in the ends.

Right mitt:
With 3.5mm needles and Alpaca Peru cast on 44(50) sts and work 3 rows 1x1 rib. Continue in stocking st until piece measures 1". Change to Baby Monkey and k 2 rows, purl one row, knit one row. Change to Alpaca Peru and continue in stocking st until piece measures 3".

Shape Thumb gusset:
Next row: K22(25) sts, pm (place marker), m1(pick up yarn between the left and right needles with the left needle from front to back and knit into the back of this loop=m1), k2, m1, pm, knit to end. Next row: Purl. Next row: Knit to marker, slip marker, m1, knit to marker, m1, (place marker back on needle after m1), knit to end of row. Next row: Purl. Repeat last two rows until there are 16(18) sts between markers ending with the rsf for next row. K38(43) sts, remove marker, turn. Working on center 16(18) sts for Thumb ignore remaining sts continue in stocking st until Thou measures 1.25(1.5)". Shape top: Next row: *K1, k2tog* repeat between *'s across row. Next row: Purl. Repeat last two rows one more time. Next row: K2tog across row. Cut yarn approx. 12", thread onto a darning needle and thread though remaining sts and pull tight, sew up the side of the Thou and fasten off. Rejoin yarn by picking up 2 sts at the base of Thumb and knit across remaining sts. Continue in stocking st across all sts starting with a purl row until piece measures 7.5(8)". Shape top: Next row: K2, ssk, k15(18), k2tog, k4, ssk, k15(18), k2tog, k2. Next row: Purl. Next row: K2, ssk, k13(16), k2tog, k4, ssk, k13(16), k2tog, k2. Next row: Purl. Continue decreasing in this manner working 2 sts less in between decreases as established until there are 20(22) sts ending with wsf for next row. P10(11), fold knitting in half with right sides facing. Using a third needle do a three needle cast off. Sew up the side of the mitt.

Left mitt:
With 3.5mm needles and Alpaca Peru cast on 44(50) sts and work 3 rows 1x1 rib. Continue in stocking st until piece measures 1". Change to Baby Monkey and k 2 rows, purl one row, knit one row. Change to Alpaca Peru and continue in stocking st until piece measures 3".
